Open-source automation with no per-task pricing, self-host it for free or pay for cloud. Powerful, but expect a learning curve on par with Make. This is for tinkerers, not beginners.

“Cheaper than Zapier or Make for high-volume automations and there are no per-task limits. The trade-off is you need technical confidence to self-host or configure it, this isn't plug-and-play.”

Overview
n8n (pronounced "nodemation") is an open-source workflow automation platform that takes a fundamentally different approach to pricing: there are no per-task or per-operation limits. You pay for the platform access, and your automations run unlimited. For trade businesses running high-volume automations, lead follow-up, review requests, job status updates, this can save hundreds of dollars per month compared to Zapier or Make.
The visual workflow builder is comparable to Make in power and flexibility, with 400+ integrations and full support for webhooks, API calls, conditional logic, and data transformation. The key difference is the self-hosted option: if you or your IT person can run a Docker container, you can run n8n for free on your own server with zero licensing cost.
Strengths: No per-task limits on any plan, run thousands of automations without worrying about overages. The self-hosted option is genuinely free and fully featured. The visual builder handles complex workflows as well as Make. Strong developer community and active open-source development. AI and LLM integrations are well ahead of competitors.
Limitations: The learning curve is steeper than Zapier and on par with Make. Self-hosting requires technical knowledge (Docker, server management). Fewer native integrations than Zapier (400+ vs 5,000+), though webhooks and API nodes fill most gaps. The cloud version is relatively new and less mature than Zapier or Make's hosted offerings. Documentation is improving but community-driven.
For technically capable trade businesses running high-volume automations, n8n is the most cost-effective option available. For everyone else, Make or Zapier remain easier starting points.
Pros & Cons
Best for
Technically capable trade businesses or those with IT support who run high-volume automations (lead follow-up, review requests, job updates) and want to avoid per-task pricing.
Not ideal for
Non-technical sole traders who want plug-and-play automation, Zapier is a much easier starting point. Also not ideal if you need 5,000+ app integrations out of the box.

All-in-one CRM that replaces HubSpot, Mailchimp, Calendly, and your review tool in one subscription. Does a lot, but expect a learning curve, most people need help setting it up.

Make
Visual automation platform that connects your apps and triggers actions between them. Handles complex workflows better than Zapier and costs less at volume, but the learning curve is steeper.
4.8/5 (1,100)
Zapier
Connects 5,000+ apps with simple trigger-action automations. Easiest way to start automating, but it gets expensive fast once you need more than basic workflows. Make is cheaper at scale.
