Overview
GoHighLevel (GHL) is an all-in-one CRM and marketing automation platform built for agencies and service businesses. It's the platform ServiceScale uses to build growth systems for trade clients, and it's the most capable tool in its price range for automating the commercial side of a trade business.
Where most job management tools stop at the operational side, GHL picks up the commercial side: capturing leads from website, Facebook, and Google; following up automatically via SMS and email within minutes; booking calls directly into your calendar; collecting Google reviews from completed jobs; and tracking every lead through a visual pipeline.
What it replaces: In a typical trade business tech stack, GHL can replace a standalone CRM (HubSpot), a review collection tool (Podium), an email marketing platform (Mailchimp), a booking tool (Calendly), and an SMS platform (MessageBird). That's meaningful cost consolidation.
What it doesn't replace: GHL is not a job management or invoicing tool. It doesn't replace Tradify, ServiceM8, or Xero. It sits alongside those tools to handle what happens before the job (lead capture, follow-up, booking) and after (review requests, re-marketing, referral requests).
The platform has a steep-ish learning curve, particularly the workflow/automation builder. ServiceScale clients typically get it set up by us rather than self-configuring.
Pros & Cons
What we like
- ✓Replaces 4–5 separate tools (CRM, email, SMS, review management, booking) in one subscription
- ✓Automation builder is genuinely powerful, once set up, lead follow-up runs on autopilot
- ✓Review collection and reputation management are excellent for Google rankings
- ✓Missed call text-back alone can save significant lost revenue for busy tradies
- ✓Exceptional value vs comparable tools (HubSpot, Podium, Mailchimp, Calendly separately)
Watch out for
- ✕Steep learning curve, not a self-service platform for most tradies
- ✕Needs a proper implementation partner to get the most out of it
- ✕US-based: no AU phone support, AU-specific templates are limited
- ✕SMS costs are additional and can add up with large contact lists
Best for
Trade businesses serious about growing revenue through systematic lead follow-up, review collection, and customer re-marketing, typically businesses doing $500K+ revenue.
Not ideal for
Sole traders who just need basic invoicing and scheduling, or businesses not yet ready to invest in their commercial systems.

The HubSpot CRM system has a genuinely generous free plan, contacts, pipeline, live chat, email marketing at $0; the Professional tier adds serious marketing muscle. Brilliant if you care about marketing, overkill if you just want to manage jobs and send invoices.

ActiveCampaign
Email marketing with genuinely good automation, set up a follow-up sequence once and it runs forever. Has a learning curve and no free plan, so only worth it if you'll actually use the automations.
4.6/5 (2,400)
Zoho CRM
CRM with a lot of features for not much money, free for up to 3 users. Highly customisable, but the interface is cluttered and you'll spend time setting it up properly.
